More than 160 lines were cast into Whitewater Lake during the Azilda Community Pickerel Hatchery Pike Derby on Aug. 14.

About 115 fish were captured then released, but it was Rob Labrecque who took first prize for reeling in the longest fish, measuring 66.5 centimeters.

Doug Taylor, a member of the hatchery, said the tournament has been going on for 19 years.

“It's a fishing derby, but it's a fundraiser for our pickerel hatchery, so we can raise money to keep running,” Taylor said.

Every year, the hatchery nurses fish from eggs to release in area lakes, like Whitewater Lake.

Money raised from the tournament goes towards purchasing equipment and preparing ponds for the young fish.

Richard Gilbert said he has been competing in the tournament “for a long time.”

Midway through the day, he and his fishing partner had already reeled in 11 fish.

Last year, Gilbert said 22 fish were brought into his boat on day of the tournament. Gilbert said the rainy weather was likely to blame for catching fewer fish this time around.

Following the tournament was a dinner and live performance.
