The first Ride for Diabetes Research in Greater Sudbury pedals up on Sept. 10 at Market Square.
The event, taking place in hour intervals at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 1 p.m. at Market Square in downtown Sudbury, helps raise money for diabetes research.
Each team participating in the challenge is made up of five riders, and on each day of the challenge, each team member takes turns riding a stationary bike. Each turn lasts eight minutes, and each time cycles for 40 minutes.
Each team member must raise a minimum of $125 to participate, and the Sudbury ride has a goal of raising $75,000.
In Canada, 2.4 million people have a form of diabetes, including 240,000 children with type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes, often called juvenile diabetes, occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It is fatal unless treated with insulin.
Diabetes affects 246 million people worldwide, and the number is expected to rise to 380 million by 2025, according to a press release from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
