Sudbury's draft pick Steven Beyers remains with Colts
Maggio, 19, was a first-round pick of the Wolves in 2007, and was drafted by the New York Rangers in 2009. The Windsor native had 31 points in 66 games with the Wolves last season.
“With seven returning defencemen, it was important for us to try and create some room on the blueline for our younger defencemen,” Wolves’ general manager Blaine Smith said in a press release. “We have restocked the shelves with two second-round draft picks that will be useful should we decide to acquire a top player through trade or through the draft.
“Dan Maggio has been a warrior for us for the past three seasons and we thank him for his efforts and wish him well in Guelph.”
With the trade, the Wolves regained their two second-round selections, which they sent to Guelph in return for 19-year-old defenceman Ben Chiarot back in January. Chiarot was drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers and the Wolves are expecting the 6-3, 220 lb defenceman to anchor their experienced blueline this season, according to the press release. The Wolves’ also received a fifth round selection in 2012.
Vienneau, a native of Hearst, led the Kingston Voyageurs of the Ontario Provincial Junior A league last season with a record of 27 wins, four losses, one tie, a goals against average of 2.16 and a save percentage of .928. Vienneau was a seventh-round selection of the Guelph Storm in 2008.
In another deal, the Wolves sent 18-year-old forward Steven Beyers to the Barrie Colts in return for a second-round draft selection in 2011 and future considerations. Beyers was a third-round selection of the Wolves in 2008. Beyers played the last two seasons for current Barrie Colts coach Dale Hawerchuk in Orangeville and indicated that the only team that he would report to in the OHL was Barrie.
“You never want to give up on a player but the Beyers camp made it clear he would not report to Sudbury,” Smith said in the release. “We regained our draft selection and received a second-rounder in 2011.
“As a result of the trades we made today, we have acquired three second-round draft selections which are vital to making deals for top-end players in the future. Otherwise, we will use these picks to draft top prospects for the future.”
If Beyers plays his overage year in the OHL, the Wolves will receive an additional draft selection from the Colts.
The Sudbury Wolves will open their 2010 training camp Sept. 2 at the Sudbury Arena with 60 players expected to attend. The try-out camp is open to the general public and admission is free.
