A total of 60 players attended the Wolves’ camp, which was led by new head coach Trent Cull. The Wolves will continue to pare-down their roster throughout the pre-season schedule, which includes four exhibition games and nine practice sessions.
The 30 remaining players in camp include four goaltenders, eight defencemen and 18 forwards.
The Wolves will continue to look at ways of strengthening their roster prior to the home opener on Sept. 24, as new players and free agents become available, according to a press release.
“The try-outs haven’t ended,” Wolves’ head coach Trent Cull said in the release. “We still need to reduce our roster and we will likely have some new faces arriving as well. Our players know they haven’t been guaranteed anything yet.
“There is a real battle heating-up at the forward position as the Wolves will only be signing 13 forwards.”
Two players from the Wolves Free Agent Camp remain with the club — Anthony Ranieri from Toronto and Jason Lacroix from Hearst.
“We had some excellent performances from the four players we invited from our Free Agent Camp,” Cull said. “All four players survived our first set of cuts and two will likely play in the exhibition games.”
A fifth invited player, Brad Payne, was unable to participate in the Wolves’ camp due to an injury sustained prior to the camp.
Close to 1,000 fans attended the Blue and White game Friday night with Team Blue defeating Team White 5-2. Overage forward Mike Lomas scored twice for Team Blue, while Kyle Shaw, Markus Poeck and Frankie Corrado added singles. Josh Leivo and Kristoff Kontos replied for Team White.
The Wolves will also lose four players later this week as they leave for pro camp try-outs. Ben Chiarot will skate with the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers, Marcus Foligno will return to camp with the Buffalo Sabres, and John McFarland heads to Florida to vie for a spot with the Florida Panthers. Kyle Tarini will test his skills with the AHL's Manitoba Moose.
The Wolves will begin their pre-season schedule with a home game Friday night against the Barrie Colts. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
Friday’s game is sponsored by Jungle Gym Gymnastics and admission is $12 at the door for all ages.
