After competing on world's best cross-country ski circuit for nearly a decade, Sudbury's Devon Kershaw finally took the top spot at the Tour de Ski in Toblack, Italy, Jan. 5.
The Tour de Ski features the top cross-country ski athletes in the world competing in eight races at five venues in Germany and Italy.
Settling for the silver medal on the weekend in a classic sprint race in Germany, the 28-year-old found redemption by winning the skate ski sprint event in the fifth stage of the 10-day tour, marking his first World Cup victory. He also finished second in the 15-kilometer classic pursuit race.
The three medals double Kershaw's career medal total, putting him in second spot overall in the tour. The victory also makes him only the third Canadian male to win a World Cup race in cross-country skiing.
With three races left in the tour, skiers will hit the start line Jan. 6 for a 35-kilometer point-to-point skate race.
Kershaw is currently leading the Canadian competitors. The tour is scheduled to wrap up on the weekend.
