Northern Cricket Council fundraising for new facility

The Northern Ontario Cricket Council (NOCC) is hosting a fundraising dinner April 2 to generate funds to build cricket facilities within the city.

The NOCC was formed in 2009 as non-profit organization and is the only cricket club across northern Ontario powered by the Ontario Cricket Association (OCA) and Cricket Canada (CC). The NOCC plans tournaments, special events, workshops and cricket coaching and training for all ages.

“We are continuously working towards having professional facilities for our young players who can get benefits from it and be part of Team Canada one day,” Aamir Iqbal, director of communication and public affairs for the Cricket Council, said.

“Our goals for 2011-2012 are to build the first cricket ground and practice area within the City of Greater Sudbury.”

The dinner is set for April 2 at the ParkSide Centre at the YMCA on Durham Street, beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for students and $10 for children 12 and under.

The evening will include traditional South Asian cuisine and cultural events, as well as guest speakers including John Rodriguez, former Sudbury mayor, Mike Kendal, president, Ontario Cricket Association (OCA), Susan Levesque, executive director, Sportlink Greater Sudbury Sport Council and Gina Rasool, Pizza Pizza Sudbury.
