Young paddlers stand out at provincial championship

The next wave of young paddling talent at the Sudbury Canoe Club (SCC) is in good hands, it would seem.

The next wave of young paddling talent at the Sudbury Canoe Club (SCC) is in good hands, it would seem.

Sending a crew of four competitors to the Trillium Provincial Championships in Ottawa last weekend, the SCC contingent returned home with medals in hand for each and every local athlete.

Pete Boylan captured gold in the Novice Bantam K-1 1,000-m Division B race, adding a fourth place finish in the Bantam Men K-1 Division B 100-m and fifth in the 2,000-m distance.

Ben McNeill, matched the golden effort, taking first place in the Novice Bantam K-1 1,000-m Division A and placing eighth in the Bantam Boys K-1 2,000-m.

Enara Iturregui won gold in the Peewee Women K-1 1,000-m Division B grouping and then teamed with Shayna Earl, earning bronze medals in the Peewee Women K-2 500-m Division B race.

The local quartet qualified for the Provincial Trillium races based on their performances at the Divisional Championships earlier this month.

Four more senior members of the SCC Sprint team will carry the flag next week at nationals as Eric Brunatti, Billy Boylan, Adrian Banete and Mikaela Iturregui travel to Welland.

Fresh off an outstanding performance at the World Dragonboat Championships in Tampa Bay, Fla., Brunatti will compete in the Midget Men's K-1 1,000-m and 6,000-m events, partnering with Boylan in the K-2 1,000-m and with Banete in the K-2 500-m race.

Iturregui, meanwhile, has qualified in both the Juvenile Women's K-1 1,000-m and 500-m distances, with races kicking off Aug. 24 and wrapping up Aug. 27.
