Laurentian made history on the water Oct. 1 in Peterborough. At the 40th annual Head of the Trent regatta, Laurentian’s rowing team was in a field of more than 1,000 athletes. Leading the field of strong Laurentian finishes, Dylan Wing claimed the Voyageurs’ first rowing medal in OUA competition in some very difficult water conditions.

In the first session of the day, Wing was on the water in the heavyweight single men’s race where he claimed a silver medal in a time of 22:36.93, less than five seconds behind the first place rower from Toronto and 13 seconds ahead of the athlete from Trent, who came in third. Wing set the stage for the rest of the team as a number of top-10 finishes came pouring in.

The lightweight double women’s team of Alison Burrell and Melissa Martel came in fourth, just missing out on a medal. Rounding out the other top-10 finishes were the lightweight double men’s team of Bradley Cutler and Jamie Clock (fifth), heavyweight single woman Burrell (seventh) and the J.V. four-man boat (eighth).

Coach Amanda Schweinbenz said she is proud to see the team’s hard work paying off.

“I am really happy with everyone's performance, especially Dylan's silver medal,” she said. “The entire team has been working hard on and off the water and we are seeing the results. We are going to make a few adjustments over the next couple of weeks to get everyone ready for the Brock Invitational Regatta.”

The Brock Invitational is Oct. 15 in St. Catharines at the Royal Canadian Henley course. The team will continue to gear up for the provincial and national championships next month.
