Just a few days removed from hosting their own tournament, the Lively Hawks pulled off the biggest upset of the week as high school boys hockey action cranked into full gear.
The Hawks picked up their first win of the year, surprising the Lasalle Lancers 6-1 at T.M. Davies Community Centre in Walden last Wednesday as Greg Mishibinijima powered the attack with a hat trick. Milo Gaudin chipped in with a two-goal effort, with Corey Vaillancourt adding the other.
Jacob Schryer replied in a losing cause for Lasalle, who saw their record drop to 1-2-2 after playing to a 2-2 draw with the Espanola Spartans on Saturday.
The Lockerby Vikings remained unbeaten at 4-0-1, just one point back of the St. Charles College Cardinals, thanks in part to an 8-3 win over the Lo-Ellen Park Knights.
Jesse Johnson (3), Jacob Leore (2), Mitch Mensour (2) and Nick Quesnel handled the scoring for the winners, while Colin McCrory countered with a pair for the Knights, with Connor Mick rounding out the scoring.
The St. Benedict Bears looked to be off and running, building up a 4-0 first-period lead over the Bishop Carter Gators, thanks to goals from Catlin Cargill (2), Alex Bertuzzi and Conor Sullivan.
But that was it for the Bears scoring as the Gators rallied to make it close, falling 4-3 in the end. Justin Phillion netted a pair for coach Dan Grandbois and company, while Cory Hannon added a solo marker.
The Macdonald-Cartier Panthères, a new entry in the league this year, evened their record at 2-2, grounding the Lively Hawks 5-2. Alex Leduc and Eric Gélinas scored two goals apiece for ESMC, with Nicolas Roberge netting the other, while Gaudin and Aaron Rysdale replied for Lively.
The Confederation Chargers are deadlocked with the Panthères, posting a 7-5 victory over the Manitoulin Mustangs Thursday at Ray Plourde Arena. Cruz Stevenson paced the Chargers with a hat trick, with singles coming courtesy of Dylan Lloyd, Jordan Villeneuve, Bradley Jones and Justin Byrnes.
Dustin Varey, Jonathan Van Kesteran, Jordan Trudeau, Neil McDougall and Pierce Manitowabi registered one goal apiece for the visiting islanders.
Action resumes on Monday night at Carmichael Arena as the front-running Cardinals look to improve to 6-0, facing the Mustangs (1-2) while Lo-Ellen and Macdonald-Cartier lock horns in the nightcap.
