Cambrian College's new women’s varsity basketball team is celebrating news that next season they will play for points in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA).

The 16-member squad started its exhibition season in September, hoping to earn a spot in the OCAA. Earlier this month, the organization announced its decision to add the team to the league.

Coach Bruce Cowtan said his players are now resting up after the first half of the season. The women have achieved a 4-5 record against current OCAA teams, with eight games left to play.

“Our team would be in a playoff position if we were playing for points this year,” Cowtan said. “Everyone has worked really hard, and we’ve developed this great chemistry. We have to maintain that momentum when we face new opponents in January.”

Cambrian’s athletics director Tim Yu said this year’s team has already done an excellent job proving itself worthy of the league, and next year’s roster is bound to be even stronger.

“We didn’t recruit specific players this year since we were only in exhibition play,” Yu said. “Now, we can use the strength of our women’s varsity basketball program as another reason for student athletes to choose Cambrian.”

According to OCAA records, Cambrian has not had a women’s basketball team since the 1980-1981 season. Over the summer, Yu was looking for another sport to add to Cambrian’s varsity line-up, and Cowtan, who is also a Cambrian professor, suggested basketball.

“Adding women’s basketball means we now have an equal number of women’s and men’s varsity teams, and that’s something we always strive for,” Yu said.
