LU hoopers face tough welcome into second half

The Laurentian Lady Vees and Voyageurs tipped-off the second half of their basketball seasons over the weekend, looking to start the new year on a winning note.

The Laurentian Lady Vees and Voyageurs tipped-off the second half of their basketball seasons over the weekend, looking to start the new year on a winning note. However, the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens had other ideas, leaving the LU squads without a win on their home court.

The Lady Vees started things off Friday night against the Gee-Gees, looking to end a two-game losing streak prior to the holiday break. Scoring was hard to come by throughout the evening’s rather low scoring affair as turnovers and miscues plagued both teams early. The Lady Vees continued to struggle until the fourth quarter where they began to pick up their play but it was too little too late as the Ottawa Gee-Gees earned a 67-32 win.

Laurentian head coach Mike Clarke said he was disappointed with the result but not the effort that the Lady Vees put forth.

“Ottawa is a very strong team and tough to beat on any night. Our shooting and rebounding wasn’t good enough tonight. We have a young team and I look for us to get better as the season progresses. I was disappointed with the final result but not how the ladies competed tonight.”

On Saturday, the Ravens claimed a comfortable 68-44 win over the Lady Vees.

Clarke said he was happy with the effort put forward by his team, especially against “a top 10 team as disciplined as the Carleton Ravens.”

The Vees now sit with a 2-7 record this season.

On the men's side, the Voyageurs started their weekend with a high-paced game against the Gee-Gees Friday night. The game was a back-and-forth affair with multiple lead changes, however, in the end, the Voyageurs were on the wrong end of a 91-80 score.

On Saturday, the Raven maintained their undefeated streak, downing the Voyageurs' 98-51.

and hard work of the Voyageurs, who led the game for a majority of the first half.

Laurentian began the game as a major underdog, but led the game for the majority of the first half but eventually fell to the highly talented Carleton squad.

After the game, head coach Shawn Swords had little to say about the result, and hailed the talents of the Ravens team. He praised his team’s ability to compete for the first half of the game, and “put a true scare into the mind of the Ravens.”

The Laurentian teams are back in action Wednesday (Jan. 11) when they host the York Lions at the Ben Avery Gymnasium. The Lady Vees start the action at 6 p.m., followed by the Voyageurs at 8 p.m.

Both teams will take to the road this weekend with games against Queen's Friday and RMC Saturday.
