Tighten your shoelaces badminton fans, Ontario’s finest collegiate badminton players from the East Region will take to Collège Boréal’s court in Sudbury, looking to earn a berth into the Ontario Colleges Athletic Associations (OCAA) championships. The regional championships event is running on Feb. 3 and 4.

The East Regional Championships is gathering student-athletes from the host Collège Boréal, as well as Cambrian, Centennial, George Brown, Georgian and St. Lawrence Colleges. Players are competing in five events including; men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The top three teams from each event will advance to the OCAA Badminton Championships, hosted by Redeemer University College in Ancaster from Feb. 17 and 18.

Boréal dominated women’s team champions in 2010-2011 with returning athlete Jenna Dupuis, a third-year veteran who brought home a silver medal at provincials with her now coach Valerie Breen.

“Our returning athlete veterans, Patrick Michel, David Brunet, Justin Richardson and Jenna Dupuis, who all competed in the provincial championships in 2011, will be looking to defend their regional title this weekend,” coach Lynn Michel said.

Results from the East Regional Championships will be posted on the OCAA website at www.ocaa.com.
