Nina Kucheran, Kasey Thompson and Erik Wainman all medalled as the Provincial Long-Course Swimming Championships were staged recently in Nepean. Kucheran and Thompson, both from the Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club, earned gold and silver respectively, while Wainman, one of three athletes to qualify from the Nickel City Aquatics, earned bronze.

Just 11 years old, Kucheran was particularly impressive, winning the 100-m breastroke by almost three seconds in a time of 1:21.32. Thompson, meanwhile, finished second in the 100-m butterfly (age 15 - 1:04.93), adding a seventh place finish in the 200-m butterfly.

Wainman cracked the top 10 in both the 100 and 200-m breaststroke, reaching the podium in the former with a time of 1:13.12 while NCA teammate Abigail McDonald also had a pair of top-10 finishes in the butterfly.

Just 16 years old but competing in the 16-17 division, Kelly Hotta (SLSC) was fourth in both the 200-m and 400-m freestyle and fifth in the same stroke at the 100-m distance.

Alex Langlois, Alex Sarvas and Justin Burton-McCarthy all finished among the top 10 in at least one of their race finals.
