Track season closes on high note for local athletes

The Athletics Ontario Bantam-Midget-Youth Championships in St. Catharines over the August long weekend spelled the end of a summer of competition for many an aspiring young track and field athlete, including a solid contingent representing the Track North Athletic Club.

Topping the results from the local crew were a pair of fifth-place finishes, as Ryan Taylor (midget boys triple jump) and Allie Weeks (youth girls triple jump) both managed the feat, with teammate Zvia Mazal (youth girls triple jump) only one placement back.

The Track North group also entered a relay team in the 4 X 100-m youth girls event as Mazal teamed with Rebecca Black, Kory Guy and Teagan Moxam, finishing sixth in 52.90 seconds.

Following is a complete listing of the finishes for athletes who donned the Track North singlets:
Rebecca Black (Midget Girls)
300m - 45.84 (29th)
80m hurdles - 14.41 (8th in prelims)
80m hurdles - 14.17 (8th in finals)
200m hurdles - 33.69 (10th)

Kory Guy (Youth Girls)
100m - 13.67 (22nd in prelims)
200m - 28.30 (32nd)
400m - 1:05.98 (31st)

Zvia Mazal (Youth Girls)
200m - 27.50 (21st)
Long Jump - 4.89m (8th)
Triple Jump - 10.52m (6th)

Teagan Moxam (Youth Girls)
200m - 29.30 (35th)
300m hurdles - 48.26 (18th)

Allie Weeks (Youth Girls)
Long Jump - 4.74m (11th)
Triple Jump - 10.59m (5th)

Ryan Taylor (Midget Boys)
Long Jump - 4.91m (12th)
Triple Jump - 11.57m (5th)

In other regional track and field news, Manitoulin Island native Joseph Maxwell has been named to the Legion Team Ontario squad that heads to Prince Edward Island next week, competing at the 2012 National Youth Track and Field Championships in Charlottetown from Aug. 17 to 19.
