Nickel City Roller Derby’s (NCRD) most anticipated bout of the summer is finally here. This Saturday, Aug. 18, Sudbury’s very own Sister Slag welcomes Alliston’s Misfit Militia to the Dr. Edgar Leclair Arena in Azilda.

This action-filled bout will feature special guest announcer Cranky Pants and local band Blackwater. After the action, teams and fans are invited to the Townehouse to enjoy refreshments and some more live entertainment.

Earlier this summer, both teams participated in the Roller Derby Association of Canada’s (RDAC) 2012 Eastern Canadian Championship. The teams didn't get to compete against each other at the tournament, however, both teams played fiercely against their competitors, earning the fifth and sixth rankings. These two derby teams are evenly matched and in for a challenge that is going to be a definite crowd pleaser, a press release stated.

“Participating in the RDAC Eastern Championship was our first tournament and it was phenomenal,” Elle Hoar, Sister Slag captain and league president, said. “Sister Slag has worked hard these past couple of years to get to a point where we can challenge our derby sisters to the south.”

The Azilda Arena will open its doors to fans at 6 p.m. with the teams hitting the track at 7 p.m. Both teams will participate in a game demonstration prior to the first whistle to help new fans get acquainted with roller derby. Tickets are available in advance at Records on Wheels, The Townehouse Tavern and from your local derby girl.
