The players of the Walden Ladies Slo-Pitch League are set to compete in the league's annual tug-of-war competition, Pulling for the Cure, in support of the Northern Cancer Foundation, this weekend.

On Saturday (Sept. 8), the ladies will take an hour out of their playoff weekend to test their strength.

In addition, members of the Greater Sudbury Fire Department will compete against a group from the Greater Sudbury Police Service in an exhibition “grudge” match.

The Pulling for the Cure fundraiser was launched in 2006 by the Walden Slo-Pitch league after one of the players, Sandi Gorman, was diagnosed with breast cancer. A Tug-of-War competition was created and held during the ladies’ and mixed playoff weekends as a show of support for Gorman and a demonstration of how the slo-pitch league and her community were pulling for her recovery.

It has since bloomed into a support system for many league members and families in the community who have also used the facilities at the Northeast Cancer Centre.

The public is invited to come out and cheer for their favourite team, all while supporting a worthwhile cause. The event will take place Sept. 8 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Oja Sports Complex in Naughton.
