The Lo-Ellen Park Knights senior girls basketball team are making a habit of hitting the podium these days.

Just a couple of weeks after laying claim to silver medals at the Laurentian University High School Girls Basketball Tournament, the Knights were adding a little extra hardware to the trophy case in Sault Ste. Marie.

Lo-Ellen edged Hammarskjold of Thunder Bay 52-51 in the bronze medal game, bouncing back after a dreadful second-half performance in the semifinals against White Pines of Sault Ste. Marie.

The Knights opened the Cougar Classic with victories over Superior Heights of the Soo (52-29) and Churchill of Thunder Bay (39-32), moving on to the final four in the field of 16.

Trailing White Pines 27-26 at the half, the Knights struggled mightily over the final two quarters, eventually dropping a 54-32 decision to the Wolverines.

Thankfully for coach Jenn Bourget and company, the girls rebounded to squeak out a close win in their final game, providing a little momentum heading back into league play in Sudbury.

Lo-Ellen Park will travel to one more out-of-town tournament, heading to Ottawa from Oct. 12 to 14, beginning preparation soon thereafter for what should be an exciting SDSSAA playoff schedule in early November.

Lo-Ellen offensive catalyst Marianne Alarie was named to the tournament All-Star team in Sault Ste. Marie.

Also, in a correction to a previous article, Alarie was also recognized as tournament MVP at the Laurentian tournament. The initial story had indicated that the sharp-shooting Knight was named to the all-star team.
