The Laurentian Voyageurs men’s soccer team headed to Toronto Oct. 24 looking to extend their season as they took on Ryerson in the first round of the OUA East playoffs.

Despite a strong showing from Laurentian keeper Matt George, the Voyageurs fell 2-0, ending their season.

George made some key saves early in the contest, but the Rams were able to break through in the 17th minute off of a corner kick.

That goal lit a fire of sorts under the Voyageurs as they pushed for an equalizer. Laurentian’s fifth-year striker, Davor Alisic, was awarded a penalty shot late in the first half, looking to tie the game before heading into the break.

Alisic fired a shot aimed for the right corner, but the goalie guessed along with him to make the save and preserve the one-goal lead.

The men came out flying in the second half, generating no less than three quality opportunities to score but were unable to capitalize on any of them.

In the 81st minute, with the men pushing forward to find that tying goal, a Ryerson player broke the other way and tallied a second goal for the Rams, essentially putting the game out of reach.

The loss ultimately ends the Voyageurs’ season, one that failed to see them find the back of the net on a consistent basis. The focus will now turn to next season and recruiting to fill some of the holes that will be left behind by the handful of graduating athletes, including Alisic and defender Brian Kavaratzis.
