Greater Sudbury Roller Derby (GSRD) marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month by contributing to a cause close to its heart.

Following a successful inaugural year, GSRD presented the Breast Action Coalition-Sudbury (BAC-S) with a $3,000 donation that will assist those who are facing financial challenges after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

The funds were raised at the league’s two summer bouts, during which 75 per cent of the proceeds from ticket sales were set aside for BAC-S.

“We’re grateful for all the new fans who came out to support our league and, by doing so, also supported people in Sudbury who will benefit from their contribution,” said GSRD president Crystal Larose, who is also a BAC-S member. “We’re proud to contribute to BAC-S and the good work they do in the community.”

The donation will go directly into the organization’s Dragonfly Fund, which helps women cover expenses incurred while undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and provides educational materials for those who are newly diagnosed. The funds are donated to the Northern Cancer Foundation, and allocated by supportive care programs, noted BAC-S president Anne Matte.

The Dragonfly Fund was initiated in 2007 after Matte’s mom died of breast cancer.

“The Breast Action Coalition-Sudbury gratefully acknowledges this monetary donation from the gals of GSRD," Matte said. "Having young, strong, dynamic women support our cause is incredible.

"These funds are kept in our community, for women and men newly diagnosed with breast cancer, which is a life-changing experience for them, their family and friends.”

GSRD was founded in January 2012. As the fastest growing women’s sport in the world, flat-track roller derby welcomes members of all ages, sizes and skill levels to join in the fun, camaraderie and community involvement that make up this popular, full-contact sport.
