The express train that is the Lockerby Viking is gathering steam and chugging along nicely.

After posting a record of 0-7-1 in their first eight games, the Lockerby senior boys hockey team has rallied to win four straight, including a clean sweep this week of the Lo-Ellen Park Knights.

On Jan. 6, at the Carmichael Arena, Nick Quesnel paced the Vikings with a hat trick, with single markers coming courtesy of James Pardon, Jacob Bates and Mitch Mensour in a 6-1 Lockerby win over the Knights.

A third-period power-play goal from Daulton Susteric spoiled the shutout bid of netminder Brady Hancharyk.

It was more of the same Jan. 9 at the McLelland Arena as Mensour and Keegan Basso each hit for the three spot, leading Lockerby past Lo-Ellen 7-2.

Blake Wisniewski rounded out the scoring for the winners, wiring a blast from the point, while Parker Camirand and Thomas Costello countered with goals for the Knights.

In other action this week, the Manitoulin Mustangs moved one point ahead of St Benedict and two up on the Vikings, recording a 6-1 win over the Confederation Chargers.

Justin Lanktree drained the hat trick for the visitors from the island, with Dustin Varey adding a pair and Jon Van Kesteran closing out the offence.

Taylor McGee scored the only goal of the game for Confederation late in the third as the Chargers (1-8-1) are mired in last place, one point back of Lo-Ellen (2-8-0).

At the other end of the standings, the Macdonald-Cartier Panthères pulled into a first place tie with Bishop Carter, disposing of the St Benedict Bears by a final score of 6-1.

Undefeated at 6-0-1, the St Charles College Cardinals sit poised to leap past both the Panthères and the Gators, holding at least four games in hand over the front-runners.

That said, some head-to-head matchups late this week will prove crucial as the Cards battle Macdonald-Cartier tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Countryside before locking horns with Bishop Carter tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Centennial Arena in Hanmer.
