Wolves douse Spitfires in 8-4 win

The Sudbury Wolves completed a five-game home stand with a convincing 8-4 victory over the Windsor Spitfires on Jan. 27.

The win gives the Wolves a .700 winning percentage over the five-game home stretch with a record of two wins, two overtime losses and one shoot-out loss for a total of seven out of 10 points. The string of points now gives the Wolves 54 points after 49 games.

The Spitfires opened the scoring at the 5:27 mark of the first frame, but the Wolves tied things up at one less than two minutes later on a goal by Mathew Campagna.

The Wolves then took their first lead of the evening at the 12:18 mark of the frame when Dominik Kubalik fired a shot from the point that ricocheted past Jaroslav Pavelka in the Spitfires goal.

Alexander Khokhalchev scored the equalizer at the 13:15 mark of the frame, tying the game up at two.

The offensive explosion continued in the first period, with Kubalik restoring the Wolves' one-goal lead at the 14:56 mark of the period.

After 20 minutes of play, the Wolves held a 3-2 lead, although the Spitfires held the edge in shots in the first frame by a 20 to 14 margin.

Kubalik sent the Wolves faithful into a frenzy 2:45 into the second frame when he beat Pavelka complete the hat trick.

With the goal, the Wolves took a 4-2 lead.

Nathan Pancel extended the Wolves' lead to 5-2 with nine minutes to play in the second frame, chasing Pavelka from the game.

Jordan Dekort was brought in for the remainder of the contest.

The Spitfires, however, would not go away quietly as Khokhalchev banged home a rebound for his second goal of the evening to pull the Spitfires within two.

The Wolves would outshot the Spitfires in the second period 13 to 12.

The Wolves pulled away early in the third, as Ray Huether fired a shot upstairs on Dekort to take a 6-3 lead.

The Spitfires crawled within two once again as Khokhalchev notched his third goal of the evening with less than nine minutes to play in regulation.

Nick Baptiste added an insurance marker on the power play with 6:09 to go in the third as he tipped home a Charlie Dodero point shot to extend the Wolves lead to 7-4.

Michael Kantor sealed the deal for the Wolves in the final seconds of the game as he banged home a rebound past Dekort.

The Spitfires held the edge in shots in the third frame by a 15 to 13 margin.

The Wolves now have a record of 6-1-2-1 or a .750 winning percentage in the month of January. The pack will close out the month of January on Jan. 31 with a trip to Niagara.

The Wolves now sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference -- and only four points behind third-place Oshawa Generals. The Wolves have also stretched their home point streak to 13 games.

Campagna now finds himself among the top 20 scorers in the OHL with 53 points in 48 games. The Mississauga native continues to be one of the hottest scorers in the OHL since Dec. 1.

Baptiste and Pancel have combined to form one of the best offensive lines in the OHL since Dec. 1.

Kubalik' hat trick brings him to 12 goals on the season as the Czech forward has found the mark of late.

The Wolves power play is now fifth best in the OHL while the team's penalty killing remains 15th in the league.

The Wolves' defensive corps has also played well of late including newcomers Kevin Raine and Cory Genovese.

Palazzese has played every game in goal for the Wolves since the trade deadline as the Mississauga native continues to show why he is regarded as one of the best goaltenders in the OHL.

Tickets are now on sale for the Wolves double-header weekend on Feb. 8 against the Brampton Battalion and Feb. 9 against the Mississauga Steelheads.
