The Sudbury Wolves wrapped up their weekend schedule on Saturday night in a 3-2 shootout win against the Mississauga Steelheads.
The Feb. 9 game also marked the return of Vale's Sudbury Saturday Night, where the mining company handed over a $50,000 cheque to Maison Vale Hospice, and the Shaft Bottom Boys provided second-intermission entertainment.
In hockey action, the Wolves' victory puts the pack two points ahead of the Brampton Battalion for fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. The Wolves also extend their home regulation unbeaten streak to 15 games, which has seen them post an impressive 9-0-3-3 record.
The Steelheads jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the first period when Andrew Goldberg banged home a rebound past Wolves’ netminder Franky Palazzese.
Jake Harris got the Wolves on the board with 9:51 remaining in the first frame as he fired the puck past Steelheads’ netminder Tyson Teichmann to tie the game at one.
The Wolves held the edge in shots in the first frame by a 14-10 margin.
Mathew Campagna wasted no time in scoring the go-ahead goal for the Wolves in the second as he beat Teichmann 26 seconds into the frame to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
The Steelheads responded at the 13:55 mark of the second period when Alex Cord slid the puck past Palazesse to tie things up at two.
The rest of the period would remain scoreless and the teams would head to their respective dressing rooms deadlocked in a 2-2 tie after two periods of play.
The Wolves again outshot the Steelheads for the second straight period by a 9-7 margin.
The third period and overtime solved nothing and the Wolves went into a shootout for the second night in a row.
It was Charlie Dodero who proved to be the hero for the Wolves, scoring a beauty in the shootout to seal the victory for the Wolves.
The Wolves will return to the ice Feb. 15 when Doug Gilmour's Kingston Frontenacs make their one and only visit to the Sudbury Arena this season.
The Wolves are currently 14 points up on the Frontenacs, who hold a slim four-point lead on the final play-off spot in the conference.
