Cross-country skiers will be hitting the trails at the Laurentian Ski Trials Feb. 17 for the Sophie Manarin Nickel Loppet — the first event in the Sudbury Fitness Challenge.

The annual event is meant to encourage both recreational and competitive skiers to enjoy the trails. Formerly known as the Nickel Loppet, the event took on the name of Sophie Manarin, the Canadian champion skier who passed away in a tragic bicycle accident in 2001.

“The Laurentian Nordic Ski Club remembers Sofie as a Jackrabbit skier and later a champion,” said Perry Sakki, president of the Laurentian Nordic Ski Club. “She was a fireball — a dedicated athlete who was headed for the Olympics.”

Skiers wishing to register for the seven-, 14- or 30-kilometre loop must do so online by Feb. 16 at 9 p.m.

Visit www.zone4.ca for more information, or phone 705-522-0401 or 705-522-5667.

Registration for the Kids Challenge, which includes a 100-metre race, as well as one- and two-kilometre events, will take place Feb. 17 at 8:30 a.m.

All participants must pick up their bibs by 9:30 a.m.
