Fundraiser goes ‘Beyond the Barbell’

A local group of fitness enthusiasts from CrossFit Sudbury will be raising the bar, literally, with a fundraising event on June 1 called Battle Beyond the Barbell in support of the Janis Foligno Foundation, according to a news release.

“We are holding this event for two reasons,” said CrossFit Sudbury owner, Dr. Adam Ball. “We want to promote physical fitness as a way to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but we also want to make a difference in the community by raising funds for a cause that is close to our hearts and to many in Greater Sudbury who have been affected by cancer.”

The June 1 fundraiser will include a traditional CrossFit competition for gym members, as well as various fitness activities for the public, with prizes for the winners.

There will also be a barbecue and desserts made by Cindy’s Gluten Free Bakehouse.

Raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win an autographed jersey and hockey stick from Nick and Marcus Foligno, NHL stars and sons of the late Janis Foligno.

“I’m really happy to see that CrossFit Sudbury is partnering up to raise funds for my mom’s foundation,” said Nick Foligno. “It’s great to see the community stay healthy and support this worthwhile cause.”

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the new CrossFit Sudbury Gym, located in the West End Industrial Park, 1351-E Kelly Lake Road, Unit 7.

“When we planned the grand opening for the new gym, our members and staff decided that it would be fun to show people what CrossFit is, while supporting a great cause” said Ball. “Through Battle Beyond the Barbell, we hope to inspire people of all ability levels to be more active, whether it be through CrossFit or at home in their living rooms.”

CrossFit, a relatively new and recently popular type of fitness regime, is made up of a community of people who, despite their highly varied backgrounds, are united in their endeavour to get and stay healthy. Building strength, flexibility and general fitness is appropriate for people of all ages and abilities.

The Janis Foligno Foundation was created in memory of Janis Foligno, who passed away in July, 2009 after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

To date, the foundation has supported various charities, including the Sudbury Regional Hospital Foundation’s Breast Cancer Equipment Fund, the Maison Vale Hospice, Meals on Wheels and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).
