Add two more teams representing the Sudbury Rockhounds to the list of those who have been hit square between the eyes with this harsh reality.
Despite enjoying a great deal of tournament success this year and posting a 2-1 record in round-robin play in Whitby, the Novice Rockhounds were eliminated in a tie-breaker.
The team finished in a three-way tie in first place in their pool, with only two teams advancing to the quarter-finals. The Sudbury youngsters looked strong out of the gate, downing both the Mimico Mountaineers (5-3) and Owen Sound North Stars (3-1).
Unfortunately, a 6-3 loss at the hands of the Centre Wellington Mohawks was enough to throw the delicate balance of goals for and goals against out of whack for the locals, who were eliminated from competition while Centre Wellington and Owen Sound moved on.
The end result was every bit as disheartening for the Sudbury Midget Rockhounds, who cruised through preliminary-round action with a record of 3-0. The northern lads obliterated both the Milton Mavericks (10-2) and Toronto Stars (8-2), looking only slightly less dominant in squashing the Shelburne Veterans 8-5 in Game 3.
The winning streak, however, came to a screeching halt when the Rockhounds were sidelined by the Huntsville Hawks, dropping a 9-7 decision to their Highway 11 adversaries.
The novices and midgets capped off the 10-day Ontario Lacrosse Festival, with the Sudbury contingent claiming one set of medals in 2013 as the Intermediate Rockhounds garnered gold in Division C competition.
