For the second time in as many OCAA post-season appearances, the Shield recorded a victory in their East Division quarter-final game.
And what a victory it was.
The Cambrian ladies absolutely shocked the Durham Lords Saturday in Oshawa, picking up a 1-0 overtime win just weeks after the Lords handled the Shield with relative ease, knocking off the locals 5-1 in regular season play in Sudbury.
T.K. Rocca drilled home a well-timed header of a corner kick from teammate Megan Symalkalski in the first overtime segment, with the Shield holding on defensively over the second half of OT for the win.
“Without question, this is the greatest result for the program to date,” said head coach Giuseppe Politi. “Cambrian had never beaten Durham ever in women’s soccer, and that is something in and of itself.”
Ashley Bechard recorded the shutout for the Golden Shield, while Politi noted the exceptional play of centre midfielders Symalkalski and Mollie Burnie, helping to deny the attack of the Lords.
Cambrian advances to face the West Division leading Humber Hawks in one of four quarter-final games slated for Saturday, Oct. 19.
