On the heels of their shocking upset of the Durham Lords in OCAA quarter-final play last week, the locals narrowly missed duplicating the feat one week later.
The Golden Shield were eliminated Saturday following a tough 1-0 loss at the hands of the three-time provincial champion Humber Hawks. A first-half goal by Ashley Orsorio would stand as the game-winning tally as the Hawks demonstrated why they are consistently among the OCAA elite.
“Although it is disappointing to end the season in such a close match, we couldn’t have asked for more from the team,” said Cambrian head coach Giuseppe Politi. “We stuck to the game plan well, but we couldn’t generate enough going forward, especially in the second half.”
The loss brings to an end the most successful campaign that the Golden Shield women’s soccer team has ever enjoyed.
“Hopefully this season can be used as a building block for the 2014 campaign in terms of player retention, player development and new player recruitment,” Politi added.
It’s another busy weekend ahead as the Cambrian cross-country team compete at the OCAA Championships in Hamilton on Saturday, with men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball also opening their respective seasons on Oct. 26 and 27.
