Many of the teams that are expected to contend for both city championships and NOSSA titles were among the last ones standing as St. Charles College hosted their annual junior/senior boys volleyball tournament.
Riding an impressive local win streak that dates back more than a full year, the Lasalle Lancers junior boys appear unlikely to surrender even a set, let alone lose a match as they dominated at yet another tournament.
Lasalle toppled the Timiskaming District Secondary School Saints 25-16, 25-11 in the gold-medal affair after sweeping aside the Macdonald-Cartier Panthères 25-10, 25-10 in semifinal play.
Timiskaming, by contrast, went three full sets before eliminating the West Ferris Trojans (North Bay) 25-23, 22-25, 15-10 in order to advance to face the powerful Lancers.
Lasalle has reeled off 15 consecutive set victories so far this year in regular season play, with four games remaining before the playoffs arrive in November.
In the senior bracket, the latest edition of the Lockerby Vikings/Lo-Ellen Park Knights senior boys volleyball rivalry was staged in New Sudbury, with the Vikes earning bragging rights this time around, 25-17, 25-16.
Both squads emerged unscathed from the afternoon semifinals, with Lockerby beating Macdonald-Cartier (25-15, 25-23) while Lo-Ellen bumped off the host Cardinals 25-12, 25-19.
The Knights hold the upper hand in league action, undefeated at 4-0 although Lockerby sits first at 5-1, having played two more games than coach Cathy Sutton and company.
