Bantam B Lady Wolves chew through Sharkfest

A shutdown defence and some timely offence proved to be just the right recipe as the Sudbury Bantam B Lady Wolves navigated some treacherous waters recently in Barrie.
A shutdown defence and some timely offence proved to be just the right recipe as the Sudbury Bantam B Lady Wolves navigated some treacherous waters recently in Barrie.

The local girls hockey team emerged as divisional champions from the 22nd Annual Sharkfest Tournament, remaining unbeaten over the course of their five game schedule. In fact, the only matchup that did not produce a victory for the Lady Wolves was their 0-0 tie with the Georgina Golden Hawks in their opening contest, as Dana McLeod recorded the shutout for Sudbury.

The team started to roll in Game 2, blanking the Clearview Icecats as Mikayla Rochon, Hollie Demore, Aurora Ominika-Enosse and Danika Gagnon all hit the mark for the Bantam B crew.

Goaltender Andrea Gagnon followed nicely in the footsteps of her counterpart, making it two straight shutouts for the northern ladies. Looking to secure a spot in the Sunday semifinals, the Lady Wolves edged the Woolwich Wild 2-1, receiving goals from Chelsea Dokisand Danika Gagnon.

Gagnon was, once again, at the forefront the next morning, netting the game-winning tally as Sudbury trimmed the Flamborough Falcons 1-0, with Andrea Gagnon registering her second whitewash of the weekend.

With their eyes now fixed on the prize, the Lady Wolves would face a rematch with Georgina, the only team that they had not managed to defeat. The encounter proved every bit as close as the first meeting, with the SDGHA reps earning gold thanks to a 2-0 triumph.

Mackenzie Gillis and Danika Gagnon scored in support of the shutout netminding of Andrea Gagnon.

Head coach Mitch Medina was especially pleased with the stifling defence his team displayed over the course of the tournament.

"Although it’s quite evident in looking at the outcomes from this weekend, I’d like to acknowledge the defensive core of Millana Marcon, Hollie Demore, Sydney Medina, Seneca Manitowabi and Kaitlyn Simard," said Medina.

The 2013-2014 roster for the Sudbury Bantam B Lady Wolves features Alex Carey, Hollie Demore, Chelsea Dokis, Andrea Gagnon, Danika Gagnon, Mackenzie Gillis, Seneca Manitowabi, Millana Marcon, Dana McLeod, Sydney Medina, Aurora Ominika-Enosse, Alex Parent, Makayla Rochon, Kaitlyn Simard, Jessika Turcotte and Cally Vanier.

Team staff includes head coach Mitch Medina as well as assistants Kevin Demore, Regan Thompson and Paul Marcon, trainer Barb Simard and team manager Tina Vincent.
