Nickel City Aquatics earns strong finish at Division III championships

Taking a smaller contingent than usual down to the Swim Ontario Division III team championships in Windsor, the Nickel City Aquatics team didn't return home empty handed.

While Abigail McDonald led the charge with five first-place finishes, Sidney Musico and Michael Reich also hit the podium, earning silver and bronze medals respectively.

In addition, Joshua Clapham, Joseph Deni, Joshua Jeanveau, Niko Ovaska, Peter Reich and Gavin Staalstra all recorded top-ten finishes, as the crew of 14 athletes made up for a lack of quantity with exceptional quality.

Building off a summer that saw her earn a bronze medal at Age Group Nationals, McDonald captured gold in the 100m butterfly (1:10.04), 200m butterfly (2:41.67), 100m backstroke (1:12.23), 200m backstroke (2:31.97) and 400m individual medley (5:40.74).

Musico and Reich cracked the top three in the 200m butterfly (3:0107) and 50m breaststroke (50.56).

Team NCA placed 19th at the event.

NCA members next joins other swim teams from across the North at the Northeast Ontario Region training camp in North Bay from January 10-12.

Then, the NCA squad sets its sights on the Ontario Winter Festivals and Short Course Provincials in February.
