Sisters compete against the world's best martial artists

Two local martial artists captures some hardware at the 2014 USA Open Karate Championships in Las Vegas this month. Marissa and Juliana Meandro were among the 2,400 competitors at the 12th annual event, held April 16-20.

Two local martial artists captures some hardware at the 2014 USA Open Karate Championships in Las Vegas this month.

Marissa and Juliana Meandro were among the 2,400 competitors at the 12th annual event, held April 16-20. It is regarded as one of the fastest growing and best tournaments held each year.

Marissa placed fifth in weapons kata, while Juliana brought home a bronze medal in weapons.

The sisters are bringing back an experience of a lifetime and have learned lots from this tournament, said a press release from Benoit's Martial Arts.

Both Marissa and Juliana took silver medals in their respective age division in traditional kata at the 2014 Junior International Cup.
