The Walden Mountain Bike Club, Pulse Racing and the City of Greater Sudbury are hosting the 2014 Ontario leg of the Canada CUP XCO Mountain Bike Series at the Naughton Bike trails on July 11-13.
President of the WMBC Rob St. Marseille said the clubs is expecting 500 to 700 racers in July.
“Confirmed already are both the men’s and ladies Olympic Mountain Bike teams along with 2012 World MTB champion Catherine Pendrel,” said St. Marseille.
The local Wolfpac Racing Team will also be well represented with names like Paul Guenette, Dominic Girard, Alex Smith, Roger Girard and Charlie Reid.
“Since 2010, when the club was formed, at least one team member has been on the podium at Ontario Cup events,” said St. Marseille.
St. Marseille said the club has learned a lot from hosting the event last year.
“One of the reasons we expect the event to be a success is because of the feedback we got last year from the racing community and the organizers. You take that feedback, change and fix the things you think need to be corrected and go from there.
“We are featuring a new course this year. It will be a little faster course and I think a little more fun.”
Of course hosting a national event with up to 700 racers expected, St. Marseille said they’re looking for volunteers to help out.
“We are looking for as many as 70 volunteers. They will be doing things like course marshaling, registration, set up and tear down, parking and venue management.”
