The JB Sox and Sudbury Aquatech North Stars proved to be the class of the field at the fifth annual Brad Rienguette Memorial Tournament last weekend, but in the end, only one of the two could win it all.

Jumping on tired Stars starter Mike Loach for six runs in the first two innings, the Sox set the tone, cruising to an 11-5 win as Tim Conway earned his third win of the weekend on the mound, garnering tournament top pitcher accolades as well.

Eddie Roy proved to be the catalyst offensively for the winners, capping a .615 three-home-run weekend with a 3-for-3 performance in the final. Jesse St. Cyr went 2-for-3 with a double for the North Stars, recognized as the Player of the Game for his crew in the championship affair, while Joel Belanger scooped up the honours for the JB Sox.

The Sox breezed through round-robin play with victories over the Dog House (5-0), Wiky Lumberjacks (7-3) and Parry Island Hawks (5-1), with Sudbury Aquatech matching them win for win, beating the Panthers (16-0), Blind River Lumberkings (7-2) andSagamok (8-2).

In semifinal play, the Panthers proved no match for pitcher Ken Besner and the Sox, with Besner allowing only four runners to reach base in an 8-2 win. Roy enjoyed a 3-for-3 encounter at the plate, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs, while Pat Rogers slammed a two-run home run in a losing cause for the Panthers.

While many on hand figured the semifinal battle between the North Stars and Wiky Lumberjacks might well be one to remember, the eventual tournament champs had other ideas.

With Loach tossing three innings of perfect ball and Heikel Espanosa (third HR of tournament), Lyle Baibomcai (second home run) and Mark Cain (2-for-2 - double) leading the attack, Sudbury Aquatech took care of business in a hurry, winning 10-0 in a contest that was called due to the mercy rule.

Meanwhile, play in the Quentin Seeley Remax Fastball League resumed immediately following the tournament, with the post-season set to kickoff on Thursday night in Garson.
