The start of what promises to be an outstanding season-long minor hockey rivalry kicked off Sunday in Val Caron as the Sudbury Atom A/AA Lady Wolves and the Nickel City Minor Atom AA Sons battled their way to a 2-2 draw at the Raymond Plourde Arena.

The fast-paced contest remained scoreless through the opening two periods of play, before the offensive floodgates opened in the third. The only minor-aged player selected to the Lady Wolves roster last spring, forward Claudine Tubin, proved the coaching staff right, scoring twice in a 21-second span to give the girls a 2-0 lead.

Breaking the ice with a wrist shot in tight, Tubin was credited with the second goal when a blast from the blue-line from Pascale Tremblay deflected off the skate of Tubin and in, doubling the lead.

The Sons cut into that deficit three minutes later when Derrick Lecuyer rang a shot from the slot off the far post and in, before helping out with the game-tying marker.

A high wrist shot from Lecuyer produced a rebound that was tapped in, at the edge of the goal crease, by teammate Kohen Crane. Goaltender Zoe Rienguette finished the contest with 18 saves, making several key stops in the opening few minutes and allowing her team to settle down.

The Nickel City goaltending duties were split between Logan Carr and Owen McKeachnie, with the tandem combining for 16 saves. The Lady Wolves will open tournament play on the weekend of Sept. 19-21, travelling to Stoney Creek along with both the Sudbury girls Peewee AA and Bantam AA entries.
