Cambrian men, women net weekend points

In some years, 15 goals might equate to triple the entire season production for the Cambrian Golden Shield women's soccer team.

Not in 2014.

That total of 15 is actually just what the Cambrian ladies have netted in their past two games, picking up a second-straight lopsided victory at home this past Saturday.

The Golden Shield thumped the George Brown Huskies 8-0 as TK Rocca and Tiffany Johnson scored three goals each, helping the team improve their record to 2-1, as they prepare for their first road trip of the fall.

Courtney Ceccarelli and Megan Smykalski rounded out the scoring for Cambrian, with Amelia Temelini and Caitlin Driver sharing the shutout for a second straight game.

"It was a decisive victory for us, and it was good for team morale in front of a decent crowd," noted coach Giuseppe Politi. "We want to keep pace with the top teams in the division as much as possible."

The Cambrian men, meanwhile, picked up a key point against the George Brown Huskies, playing to a 1-1 draw in a contest that was filled with intrigue.

While Irijah Bartholomew (Shield) and Steve Efstathiadis (Huskies) traded second-half goals, both teams missed penalty kicks, with Cambrian finishing the contest with just 10 players as Bartholomew received his second yellow card late in the game.

"We probably should have won, but with the drama that occurred in the second half, we will take the draw and move on," said Politi. "I'm most pleased that the guys were able to come back after going down 1-0, and finished off the game a man down to earn a valuable point."

The Golden Shield teams travel to eastern Ontario, facing the Fleming Knights (Peterborough) on Saturday and matching up with the St Lawrence Vikings (Kingston) on Sunday.
