Girls flag football season up and running

The path to a fourth straight SDSSAA girls flag football championship will not be an easy one for the Marymount Regals. Not that this was previously the case, nor the way that coaches Dan Bartolucci or Jason Weiler would want it.

In a rematch of the 2013 final to open the 2014 season, the Lively Hawks issued a little payback, stopping the three-time defending champs 22-6 Tuesday afternoon at the James Jerome Sports Complex.

Tatum Hurley showed the way for the Hawks, scoring a pair of touchdowns, with Colleen Bocy getting the other. Bocy added a two-point conversion, as did Grade 12 veteran Amy Laframboise.

"Obviously, there was more pressure on them, we were the underdogs," said Laframboise. "It all came together today. It's such an adrenaline rush. It feels great."

Part of a swarming defence that returned a number of key components, Laframboise noted there was a specific focus in practice leading up to the matchup of the two contenders.

"We practised a lot of 'flag grabbing,' because that's one of the main things," she said. "At the beginning of this game, I wasn't doing great. I was a little rusty. I like looking at the flag, watching it come right into my hands, and then yanking on it."

Only Chantae Robinson, the Jamaican-born multisport talent taking her first crack at flag football, managed to elude the Hawks' defence in making her way to the end zone.

In other Division A games this week, the Confederation Chargers picked up right where they left off, beating the Lockerby Vikings 23-13 after earning a promotion by capturing the B crown last fall.

The Notre-Dame Alouettes, a longtime league powerhouse, opened their season on a winning note, blanking the St. Charles College Cardinals 27-0. In Division B action, the Lo-Ellen Park Knights marched step in step with their boys football team, racking up a 29-6 win against the St. Benedict Bears to open the 2014 campaign.

Haley Conroy scored three touchdowns for the Knights, with Emma Short-Lapointe adding the fourth. Tajarah Riley chipped in with a two-point conversion, making a nice catch, while Alex Veno was credited with a safety touch.

The Bishop Carter Gators bounced the Lasalle Lancers 20-14, with Kianna Houben, Melissa Martel and Alicia Beaudry all recording majors for the winners. The sibling pairing of Meghan and Jena Ethier handled the scoring for the Lancers, a team loaded with athletes who received their introduction to the sport of flag football earlier this week.

Finally, the Horizon Aigles downed the Chelmsford Flyers 26-6 as all 12 teams prepare for week two play that will be highlighted by a triple-header Monday at James Jerome.
