Lancers whitewash Flyers 33-0 in flag football

The Lasalle siblings have added another weapon to their mix.

After handling all of their team's scoring in a 20-14 loss to Bishop Carter last week, the Lasalle Lancers dynamic duo of sisters Jena and Meaghan Ether brought in some reinforcements for Game 2.

Brittany Lebel scampered for a pair of touchdowns, while Jena connected with her older sister (Meaghan) for a total of three TD strikes as the Lasalle Lancers evened their record at 1-1 with a 33-0 whitewash of the Chelmsford Flyers.

Despite an entrenched family tradition in the sport of basketball — Jena has a Grade 9 twin sister playing with the Junior Lancers — the remaining Ethier clan felt that it was time for a change.

"I really wanted to try this," said Meaghan. "I'm really enjoying it. It's really aggressive, and there's lots of contact. And flagging people (securing the ball carrier's flag to stop the play) is really hard."

Knowing that this last element does not play to her strength, Meaghan sticks to offence, where she lines up at wide receiver and provides an inviting target for her sister as she makes her way down field.

"I'm thinking about where I'm supposed to be, and making sure that I'm there — fast!," she said. "(Jena) loves to throw the long pass, so I know when she throws it, she wants me to run. She's always been the thrower. I'm the one who catches."

While the Ethier tandem have participated in a variety of sports throughout their youth, they share the notion that has been mentioned many times over that flag football seems to provide a different environment entirely to other athletic activities.

"It's more about learning and improving, instead of just win, win, win," said Meaghan. "I mean I want to win, but I want to have fun while I play."

In the second game of the day, the Lockerby Vikings received two touchdowns apiece from quarterback Kennedy Sikora and Emma McDougall, outscoring the St. Charles College Cardinals 33-21.

Megan Potvin added the remaining major, with Brenna MacMillan making good on three of five converts for the Vikes. Tayler Murphy, Aymie Holota and Lora Ricketson all reached the end zone for the Cards, with Holota adding three successful conversions to her stat-line, as well.

Darcie Roy and Jordan Groom both came through with key interceptions for Lockerby, who face the three-time defending champion Marymount Regals next Wednesday at James Jerome.
The Lively Hawks are the only unbeaten team in Division A standings, with a record of 2-0, while the Lo-Ellen Park Knights share that same record over in the Division B grouping, with the Horizon Aigles close behind at 1-0-1.
