Three Sudbury Lady Wolves teams received more than their fair share of hockey as the trio travelled to the 2014 Stoney Creek AA Showcase Tournament last weekend.

After dropping their first two games, the Sudbury Bantam AA Lady Wolves would advance all the way through the consolation round, reeling off four straight victories over their final two days.

The locals were in tough out of the gate, dropping a 5-1 decision to the Boston Jr. Eagles, with Riley Maanselka netting the only goal for Sudbury. A much closer game later Friday evening, but still no win as the Clarington Flames edged the Lady Wolves 4-3.

Crystale Trottier, Lily Hayden and Kiana Verbiwski scored in a losing cause as the Bantam Wolves began to hit their stride Saturday morning. The team got rolling with a 4-1 win over the Jr. Bladies, with Verbiwski showing the way with a two-goal effort.

Lauren Hancock and Mylène Lefebvre chipped in with a goal apiece.

Sudbury advanced to the consolation semifinals by the skin of their teeth as Makayla Gratton scored in overtime, lifting Sudbury past the Kitchener Lady Rangers 3-2.

Lefebvre and Verbiwski added to their weekend goal totals to round off the attack for the Lady Wolves. After dodging that bullet, the northern girls left nothing to chance in moving on to the finals, dimming the Gloucester Stars 4-1, with Makayla Blanchard, Abbey Patterson, Rylee Moxam and Gratton providing the offence.

The Bantam girls would complete their two-day surge with a 1-0 win over the North York Storm, as Gratton netted the game's only goal, providing all of the support that Sudbury goaltender Véronique Hamelin would need.

The Sudbury Peewee AA Lady Wolves came up just one step short of matching the bantams, also getting six games under their collective belts. The Peewee ladies dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to the Belleville Bearcats in their curtain-riser, but rebounded for a 2-0 win over the Ottawa Ice.

Mireille Kingsley recorded the shutout, with Kelsey Dunn and Joelle Gagnon beating the Bearcats' netminder in helping Sudbury improve to 1-0-1. The team would took it on the chin in Game 3, beaten 5-1 by the Whitby Wolves, with Madyson Papineau spoiling the shutout bid.

Katie Chomiak and Taylor Scott found their way on to the scoresheet as the Peewee Lady Wolves stayed alive Saturday evening, slipping past the Kingston Ice Wolves 2-1. Same score in the semifinal, though this one would take an extra session as Deseray Zazulak pulled the trigger in overtime, lifting the Lady Wolves past the Nepean Wildcats 2-1.

With Nepean leading 1-0 after two periods of play, Dunn knotted the contest at 1-1, scoring midway through the final frame and setting the stage for the heroics from Zazulak.

Unfortunately, the Peewee Lady Wolves proved no match for the Pittsburgh Elite on Sunday afternoon, blanked 4-0. Trying to decide whether to register as an A or AA team, the Sudbury Atom Lady Wolves received plenty of encouraging signs in Stoney Creek, remaining competitive from start to finish.

The locals launched a noticeable pattern in their opening game, playing to a 1-1 draw with the Burlington Barracudas as Breanna Coyne handled the scoring. Same result in Game 2, with Kianna D'Attilio draining her first of the weekend in a 1-1 tie with the host Stoney Creek Sabres.

No change from the gameplan in Game 3 as Sudbury and the Cambridge Roadrunners are all knotted up at 1-1, with D'Attilio picking up her second goal in as many games.

The Lady Wolves closed out round-robin play with a 1-0 loss to the Waterloo Wolves, before being eliminated by virtue of a 2-1 overtime loss at the hands of the Ottawa Ice.

Meghan Papineau had sent the contest to overtime, scoring the equalizer with about 25 seconds to play following a mad scramble in front of the Ottawa net. The Atom ladies are back in tournament action on the weekend of Oct. 17-19, taking part in the Etobicoke Dolphins Pink the Rink Tournament.

Meanwhile, the Sudbury Lady Wolves AA teams in the midget, bantam and peewee classifications are expected to kick off regular-season play in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League some time in the next few weeks.
