Cambrian ladies reach soccer final four

Better add one more page to the saga being written by the Cambrian Golden Shield women's soccer team this fall.

In a season of firsts, the locals surpassed another threshold over the weekend, beating the Sheridan Bruins 2-0 in their OCAA quarter-final match on Saturday, and earning the right to make an inaugural visit to the Final Four next weekend.

Alessandra Falvo and Tiffany Johnson scored for Cambrian, with Amelia Temelini racking up the shutout as the Golden Shield handed the Bruins their first loss of the year, after posting a 6-0-2 record in finishing second in the OCAA West.

"The girls really deserved the win today," said head coach Giuseppe Politi. "They stuck to the game plan, in spite of the tough weather conditions, and came up with the right plays during the big moments of the match — whether a key save, tackle, pass or goal."

The team will travel to Ottawa on Friday for a semifinal encounter, already assured of playing for an OCAA medal the next day. The Cambrian men were not quite so fortunate, eliminated with a 3-0 loss at the hands of the two-time defending national champion Humber Hawks.

"I thought the boys represented the college well, and played with the right spirit we have been preaching here since we started in August," said Politi. "Overall, it was a vast improvement from last year, and hopefully we can build on this for 2015."

Meanwhile, the Cambrian men's and women's volleyball teams will open their 2014-2015 season at home on Wednesday night, with their crosstown rivals, the Collège Boréal Vipères, providing the opposition.
