Bouncing back from a very tough loss, the Cambrian Golden Shield women's soccer team returned home on Sunday a very happy lot, having secured bronze medals at the OCAA Championships in Ottawa.
Facing the undefeated host team in the semifinals on Friday, the Cambrian girls took it on the chin, losing 5-1 to the Algonquin Thunder as Lise Plut scored her first goal of the year in a losing cause.
Regrouping quickly and in a most remarkable way, the Golden Shield bounced back with one of their best performances of the year, edging the Humber Hawks 1-0 the very next day.
Tiffany Johnson scored early on an outstanding touch, and keeper Amelia Temelini made it stand, coming up with a key save in the dying minutes and earning player of the match accolades from head coach Giuseppe Politi.
"We played much more composed, and did the things that got us to the final four to begin with," said Politi. "To win the bronze medal was a fitting way to end the season and this great run of success for our women's program.
"From staff, through to the players, we know what the difference is between where we are and the next step to make a championship final. We hope this is a stepping stone for future success in achieving something even greater."
In a season of firsts for the women's soccer program at Cambrian College, a third-place finish in the entire province is likely the crowning moment.
