Legitimate contenders for a city title last spring, the Confederation Chargers have established themselves as the early season favourites this year, after taking top spot at the 35th Annual Lively District Secondary School Invitational Hockey Tournament over the weekend.

The Chargers reeled off six straight wins, culminating their impressive run with a 4-1 victory over the Lasalle Lancers, who stunned the St. Charles College Cardinals with a dramatic come-from-behind 4-3 semifinal win.

The Chargers boast the most dynamic and balanced attack in the SDSSAA league for the 2014-2015 campaign, showcasing it again against Lasalle, as Brendyn Sauvé scored a pair of goals, with Tyler Rivest and Brandon Dumouchel adding one each.

Ashton Roy netted the only goal in a losing cause for Lasalle. Confederation advanced to the finals after thumping the Franco-Cité Patriotes 7-0 in the morning semifinal, while the Lancers trailed the Cardinals 3-2 with under a minute to play.

A game-tying tally, however, from Cody Pasanen, finishing off a three-way passing play from Roy and Kyle Guillot, energized the Lancer bench, who completed the rally when Kyle Grant buried the game-winner with 10 seconds to play.

While the six-win streak assembled by the Confederation lads is enough to give them the edge in early season rankings, back-to-back ties last week with both the Collège Notre-Dame Alouettes (2-2) and Lockerby Vikings (4-4) would suggest that this top-end competition this year promises to be as good as any in recent memory.
