'Brutal' weather sets stage for Knights loss at NOSSA

Playing in field and weather conditions that Lo-Ellen Park head coach Kevin Ellsworth could only describe as brutal, the NOSSA varsity football championship encounter was doomed to feature very little scoring.

Thankfully for the Superior Heights Steelhawks and their hometown fans, the team did just well enough early in the game to earn the victory, securing the 2014 NOSSA title with a 14-0 win over the Lo-Ellen Park Knights.

Superior Heights running back Jeff Auger turned the corner just four minutes into the game, scampering 35 yards to provide his team with the only points they would ultimately need.

Auger would add a second major early in the second quarter, capping off a drive that started inside the Steelhawks' own 10-yard line, following a Lo-Ellen fumble.

"I thought we played well for three quarters," noted Ellsworth. "We had opportunities in both halves, and our defence shut them down for the final three quarters."

The Steelhawks, who dropped a one-point decision to the West Ferris Trojans one year ago, now advance to play the Georgian Bay Secondary Schools Association champion, St. Joan of Arc from Barrie.

A SDSSAA representative has not won a NOSSA football championship since 1969.
