The Sudbury Wolves played a solid road game for two periods of hockey on Thursday, but were out-gunned in the final frame as the North Bay Battalion scored three times en route to a 3-0 victory.

The Battalion were led by Michael Amadio who scored two times in the third period as the Battalion outshot the Wolves 14-4 in the final frame.

North Bay goaltender Jake Smith made some good saves for the Battalion, particularly in the second period when the Wolves fired 11 shots on goal with some of them being the point-blank variety, said a news release from the Wolves.

Matt Schmalz found himself all alone in front of North Bay’s net in the second period only to be stopped by Smith. In the third period, the Wolves hit the post, only to have the Battalion take the puck from their net and score the insurance goal of the game.

“I thought we played a solid road game, but their best players outplayed our best players, and that is something that we have to correct if we are going to win hockey games,” says Wolves head coach Paul Fixter. “I thought Sam played well in goal for us and gave us a chance to win the game, but when you don’t score, it is hard to win games.”

The Wolves' power play was 0-for-4 while the Battalion were 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

Shots on goal finished 36-18 in favour of the Battalion.

Sam Tanguay was selected third star of the game.

The arch-rivals meet up once again tonight at the Sudbury Arena with North Bay leading the eight-game season series 2-0. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
