Timmins storms to victory in Sudbury ringette tourney

The Timmins Tornadoes swept into Sudbury last weekend, and by the time the annual Sudbury Ringette Tournament wrapped up Sunday afternoon at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex, the visitors had left a path of beaten opponents in their wake.

The Tornadoes stormed their way to five of the seven championship banners that were being contested as more than 30 houseleague ringette teams from across Northern Ontario gathered for the pre-Christmas tournament.

The Timmins girls took both sides of the U10 division, as the Landry group earned white grouping honours with a 7-2 win over Iroquois Falls in the final. Sierra Landry paced the attack with a hat trick, with Keyana Breault adding a pair of goals.

Keinyah Murray and Carli Lachance closed things out for the winners, while Aurora Cuddy and Tatum Emans replied in a losing cause. The Timmins Belanger contingent walked away with the blue division banner, besting West Ferris 8-3.

The U12 Timmins crew picked up where the U10 girls left off, edging the Sudbury Wolfpak 3-2, in overtime, in the red division gold-medal affair. Emma Vaillancourt and Britney Hall found the back of the net for the local squad.

The U12 Blue crown would head west along Highway 17 as the Sault Ste. Marie Ice Hawks outscored Valley East 10-3, with Timmins returning to the winner's circle with an 11-4 triumph over the Sudbury Wolfpak in the U14 grand finale.

Emilie Viel enjoyed a four-goal outburst for the Tornadoes, with Magalie Letourneau and Meghan Boileau adding two goals apiece. Ally Perrier, Kaylee Mainville and Isabelle Rondeau were also on the scoresheet for Timmins, which took full advantage of a knee injury to Sudbury starting netminder Maddison Laframboise.

Stepping in, bravely, with little or no experience between the pipes, Morgan Spicer did her best to hold the Tornadoes at bay, while teammates Danica Barbe, Stephanie Menard, Kylee Lapalme and Kaitland Chevrier pulled the trigger for the Wolfpak.

Timmins would also claim the U16 title with a 4-2 win over Sudbury as Taylor Gilchrist and Brittany St. Amour scored for the locals. The Iroquois Falls X-Stream Wolves would deny the Tornadoes one final banner, edging Timmins 4-3 in the 18+ championship affair.
