With two comfortable victories already in the books, the Nickel City Major Peewee AAA Sons nearly let their guard down.

The team needed three unanswered third-period goals, but in the end, completed their weekend sweep of the Soo Greyhounds, doubling the visitors 6-3 Sunday afternoon at the Centennial Arena.

The Sons threatened to run away with this game early, as Blake Cornthwaite opened the scoring after just 10 seconds of play, but the Hounds settled down shortly thereafter.

By the end of the second period, the teams were deadlocked at 3-3, with Hunter Brazier and Justin Dauphinais also on the scoresheet for Nickel City, while Nicholas Kelly, with a pair, and Enzo Colizza countered for the Soo.

But is was a pair of goals from Ethan Rogers and Caleb Rainville, just 37 seconds apart early in the third period that provided the cushion, with Rogers closing out his four-point game with the final goal at 10:53 of the third period.

After the game, Rogers acknowledged that head coach Rod Mackenzie feared a possible letdown following 6-1 and 5-1 wins over Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday. "He (Mackenzie) doesn't want us to underestimate any team, because then you get over-confident, and that's not good," said Rogers.

"He told us to go out and play like we usually do."

The Sons were in control from start to finish on Saturday, as Brazier (2), Cornthwaite, Dauphinais, Rainville and Spenser Dickson all hit the mark in game one, with Kelly replying in a losing cause.

The Sons kept right on rolling along Saturday night, as their balanced attack featured goals from Rogers, Cornthwaite, Gavin Brown, Rainville and Déric Charbonneau, more than enough to offset a second-period marker from Colizza.

The Sons trail the league-leading North Bay Trappers by 10 points, but have five games in hand, picking up one of those matches this Thursday night in Azilda, welcoming the Sudbury Major Peewee AAA Wolves for an 8 p.m. puck drop.
