Wolves lose 4-1 in Saginaw

For the first time since Dave Matsos took over as interim head coach, the Sudbury Wolves looked like a last place team after a 4-1 loss in Saginaw Friday night.

The Wolves came out with no emotion and quickly found themselves down 2-0 going more than the first ten minutes of the game without even registering a shot.

Matsos says they were their own worst enemy.

"Poor board play in the defensive zone and turning pucks over summed up that first period" said Matsos.

"I call them hope plays. Blind backhanded passes through the middle when our game plan coming in was to use the boards to get behind their defense. Of the 18 shots they had in the first, half of them were created when we had full possession.

The Wolves tightened up a bit in the second period but gave up another goal and trailed 3-0 going into the third. Saginaw took a 4-0 lead before defenseman Kyle Capobianco scored Sudbury's only goal at 16:42 of the third.

With the loss the Wolves have now lost 11 games in a row as their season record drops to 7-32-1-1.

Wolves forward Matt Schmalz says they just didn't have any chemistry.

"We were fighting the puck and we had too many guys taking the night off, me included" said Schmalz.

"I haven't been contributing as much as I've wanted to lately but I have to get it back together".

The Wolves have another chance to salvage something from the weekend road trip as they play Saturday night in Plymouth.

Matsos wants to get his team right back out there.

"In my mind, the best thing for us is to get right back on the ice and play tomorrow. After a game like that I don't want to go home and practise and wait six games until we play again. Lets break it down and go at it again tomorrow and come out with a better performance".

This will be the Wolves last ever trip to Plymouth as it was announced a few days ago that the franchise has been sold and will be moving to Flint, Michigan beginning play next season.
