The Sudbury Peewee A Lady Wolves are more aware than most of exactly where the challenge of the No. 1 ranked team, in the province, in their particular grouping, is located.

The locals advanced to the tournament final of the Cambridge roadrunners New Year's Challenge Cup last weekend, settling for silver following a 2-0 loss at the hands of their well-known northern rivals, the Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats.

The locals were on fire offensively in the early going, edging the Oakville Hornets 3-2 and playing to a 4-4 draw with the Brantford Ice Cats. Vanessa McKinnon, Lauren Fearn and Allie Lumme tallied for the Lady Wolves in the Game 1 victory, with Bradie Roy showing the way in Game 2 with a two-goal effort.

Fearn and Katia Legros also found the back of the net for Sudbury.

Needing a win to secure first place in their pool, the Lady Wolves played a solid all-around game, blanking the London Devilettes 2-0.

Legros and Lumme provided the goal-scoring support for netminder Melanie Bell, recording the whitewash between the pipes. The peewee girls kept their defensive invisibility in check through to the playoff round as Kristen Mrozewski backstopped the Lady Wolves to a 1-0 win over the Windsor Wildcats.

A tally by Janelle Brunette would stand as the game-winner as Sudbury advanced to face an all-too-familiar foe.
