Cambrian men's volleyball team saddled with weekend losses

The Cambrian Golden Shield men's volleyball team is fast running out of time in their search for a playoff berth this year.

Despite playing some very good volleyball through six of their seven sets on the weekend, the Shield were still saddled with a pair of road losses, dropping their record to 3-9 on the year, eight points back of both the Fanshawe Falcons (7-3) and Niagara Knights (7-5), tied for the final playoff spot.

The Cambrian men took the Sheridan Bruins (9-4) to five sets back in November, but could not conjure up a repeat performance, falling 13-25, 25-19, 18-25, 22-25 in Toronto on Friday.

Lockerby Composite graduate Hayden Kosmerly led all hitters with 17 kills for Cambrian, followed by Stephen Brown with 11, and Thomas Stewart and Sean Moore with five kills apiece.

Jeremy Fantin and Chris Adams provided the Bruins with a solid 1-2 punch (13 and 11 kills respectively) in an encounter that pitted the Wiseman brothers in a head to head matchup.

Returning to Sudbury after completing his degree at Waterloo, Kevin is with Cambrian while elder brother Scott is studying at Sheridan. Facing the division-leading Humber Hawks the next day, the Golden Shield proved more than respectable despite a three-set sweep.

Scores of 18-25, 21-25 and 21-25 are indicative of a young Cambrian team that continues to close the gap on the front-runners. Stephen Brown (eight kills), Kosmerly (six) and Josh Brown (three) provided the primary targets for Golden Shield setter Michael Wandziak.

A 15-kill performance by Terrel Bramwell of Humber nearly doubled his closest statistical rival, leading the homeside to their 11th win in 13 attempts.

Cambrian is now at home for single game matchups the next two weekends, tangling with the Mohawk Mountaineers (10-1) on Jan. 23, and with Niagara on the Jan. 31.
