Cambrian ladies extend losing streak to 8

This was not the start the Cambrian Golden Shield women's basketball team hoped for, kicking off the second half of their 2014-2015 campaign.

Heading into a two-game set with the Redeemer Royals last weekend, with both squads having posted just a single pre-Christmas victory, coach Bruce Cowtan and company likely envisioned a tooth-and-nail battle with their Hamilton hosts.

Instead, the Shield were unceremoniously dumped, defeated 73-44 and 81-43 as the Cambrian winless skid was extended to eight games. The Royals provided little to no time for the visitors to catch their breath out of the gates on Friday, bolting to a 16-3 first-quarter lead and extending their advantage to 41-18 by halftime.

Lindsay Moffatt paced the Redeemer attack with 22 points, while Jesseca Brown and Arica Price added 15 and 11 respectively. Emily Wright-Dupuis and Isabelle Giroux both hit double digits for the Golden Shield with 10 points apiece, while Victoria Bishop added nine.

Coming back to the team after missing the first half of the season, Brown saw her minutes increase in Game 2, leading all scorers with 19 points, with Moffatt (17) and Price (10) also chipping in offensively.

Aurora Delaney-Selman broke through in a big way for Cambrian, finishing with 16 points, after recording just a single point in limited playing time in her six previous games.

Emily Tymchuk netted 13 points as well in a losing cause, while Giroux added seven. With a record of 1-10, the Golden Shield return home this coming weekend, facing the Sheridan Bruins (7-4).

Game times are set for Saturday night at 6 p.m., and then Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., with the men taking to the floor immediately afterwards.
