Winless season continues for Cambrian men

At the midway point of a winless season, the Cambrian Golden Shield men's basketball team will take whatever small victories they can.
At the midway point of a winless season, the Cambrian Golden Shield men's basketball team will take whatever small victories they can.

Losses of 90-48 and 81-45 to the Redeemer Royals last weekend in Hamilton may have dropped the Shield record to 0-11, but in so doing, they surrendered their fewest points yet in a two-game set this year, and that to a team that has now won eight straight games.

Cambrian also managed to win a quarter, outscoring Redeemer 16-14 in the fourth quarter of their Friday night opener. The Royals' attack was paced by John Woldue (19), Josh De Schiffert (18) and Nathan Di Loreto (17), while Kevin Cole (18) and Troy Williams (12) countered for Cambrian.

The Golden Shield managed to keep things closer for a longer stretch on Saturday, down 22-11 after one quarter and trailing 37-21 at the half. Woldue was once again the leading scorer for the Royals, finishing with 14 points, with Calvin Turnbull and Di Loreto adding 12 apiece.

Cole was the only Cambrian player to hit double digits, enjoying a 13-point outing, while Williams and Shayne Gillies hooped nine and eight respectively.

The local lads return home for a two-game set this weekend, battling the Sheridan Bruins (4-7) at 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.
